Chapter Twenty-One
Nick awoke the next morning in his motel room and was surprised to see Bec was still not back. He checked his phone to no new messages or calls and got up and rubbed his eyes. He messaged her and asked where she was and watched the screen. The three small dots that indicated someone was typing popped up and then disappeared. She clearly was not ready to talk.
He fossicked around in his bag and found his running gear. Ever since he was off the alcohol, he had felt a new lease on life. His clothes fit him better, his skin felt clearer, even the persistent nightmares that had haunted him for the past few years had seemed to deteriorate. He put his running gear on and heading outside to his car to grab his runners. He put his Apple Air Pods in his ears, set his classic rock playlist up, and set off toward the river.
His pace was steady, and he wasnât breaking any records, but when he hit his first kilometre, he felt clearer in his mind than he had all week. All of the puzzle pieces lay before him like a jigsaw. He just needed to put them all together in his mind.
After seeing Spencer with his assistant Victoria, it was plain to see to him that they could be an item. Along with Bec confirming Emilyâs suspicions of an affair, it was more than enough motive to want someone dead. Maybe Emily had confronted Spencer, and he had decided that enough was enough. That his new life with Victoria could be better in some way?
Nick reached the furthest point of his run and turned back toward the main street. He thought of Joanna out in Smithâs Creek and their phone call the night before, and remembered to give the chief a call to comment on her good work. He decided she would make a great partner and wanted to speak to the chief about putting her on full time if she was interested. He slowed as he neared the first café he had gone to with Bec earlier in the week and decided to grab a takeaway coffee. As he neared the front door, a woman came out looking behind herself and he nearly ran headfirst into her.
âSorry,â he said.
The woman turned around, and he realised it was Sarah Navarro, the constable who had found Emilyâs body. She was in casual clothes and held a takeaway coffee cup and banana bread in her hand. âGood morning.â
âMorning. How are you?â
âGood. Out for a run?â She held up her banana bread. âNow youâre making me feel guilty.â
Nick chuckled. âDonât. Youâre young. You wonât need to start running for a few years yet.â He realised now might be a perfect time to ask her about finding Emily. âHey, do you have a minute?â
Sarah looked down at her phone. âYeah, whatâs up?â
Sarah sat outside in the sunshine with her coffee while he ordered, and soon he returned with his coffee and the same banana bread in hand as he took a seat in front of her.
